What is Micro1?

Micro1 is an async AI video interviewer using an avatar branded "Zara." It's primarily used for engineering-role screening, is case-studied by Deel, and closed a $35M Series A in September 2025 at a reported $500M valuation. Candidates typically encounter Micro1 as an early-stage screen for remote engineering roles.
Micro1 by the numbers. $35M Series A (September 2025) at a reported $500M valuation. Publicly case-studied by Deel. Two dedicated subreddits exist for Micro1 (r/micro1 and r/micro1_ai) — an unusually high level of candidate-organized discussion for a single platform, especially considering how young the product is.

How the Micro1 interview works

A Micro1 interview is async: you receive a scheduling link, complete an ID check, and answer a series of questions from the Zara avatar. Typical format is 30–45 minutes with 4–8 technical questions. Zara asks the question via video, you record a video answer, and Zara moves to the next question. There is no live interviewer — the entire session is between you and the avatar.
  1. Scheduling and setup. You get a scheduling link, install any browser dependencies, and complete an ID verification step.
  2. Intro / calibration. Zara asks a warmup question to check your setup.
  3. Technical questions (4–8). Zara asks each question via video. You record a video answer, then confirm to move on. Each question typically has a 2–4 minute response window.
  4. Optional coding round. Some Micro1 configurations include a live coding portion. You code in the browser with your screen shared.
  5. Completion. Zara wraps the session. Micro1 transcribes and scores your responses, then forwards to the hiring team.

What candidates report on Reddit and LinkedIn

Public candidate discussion of Micro1 clusters across four surfaces: r/micro1 (dedicated subreddit), r/micro1_ai (second dedicated subreddit), Trustpilot, and Glassdoor. The tone across these surfaces is mixed. We surface both perspectives here for balance.

Positive reports. Some candidates on r/micro1 describe smooth async experiences that led to offers at Deel and other named customers. They cite the flexible scheduling (no calendar coordination with a human interviewer) and clear feedback loops as advantages. A subset of candidates prefer async video interviews over live ones for reduced social pressure.
Concerns raised. A meaningful subset of candidate reports describe passing the Micro1 screen but then never hearing back — no rejection, no next step, silence. LinkedIn discussion (search "beware of micro1") includes posts framing the platform as a job scam. Reddit threads discuss suspicion about whether some Micro1 postings correspond to real hiring intent or are dataset-gathering for AI training.

The "job scam" concern — what we know and what we don't

The LinkedIn "beware of micro1" cluster is real and searchable. Candidates in that cluster describe a specific pattern: apply to a role, pass a Micro1 screen, receive no further contact from the employer. This is not unusual in modern remote-first hiring generally, but the frequency of the report in Micro1-specific discussion is notable.

What we could verify: Micro1's real corporate presence (Series A, Deel case study, functioning product), the existence of the LinkedIn concern cluster, and the two candidate-organized subreddits.

What we couldn't verify: whether the "no follow-up" reports represent a systemic pattern or the normal signal-to-noise ratio of modern remote hiring; whether specific Micro1-hosted postings correspond to genuine hiring intent from the sponsoring employer; whether candidate video data is used for any purpose beyond the specific hiring decision. We looked, we couldn't confirm either way.

Our recommendation: treat a Micro1 screen as any other early-stage screen. Do it if the role is one you'd take. Be reasonably cautious about which employers you invest significant prep time into — the platform itself is real, but individual postings vary.

How to prepare for a Micro1 interview

Prep for Micro1 is different from prep for live human interviews. Zara is not going to follow up on your answer with a probing question, so land the answer complete on the first try. Practice the STAR cadence explicitly, keep answers to 90–120 seconds, and speak clearly on camera. Test your audio/video setup on the calibration question — the review team will not extend goodwill to a candidate whose audio was inaudible.
  • Audio/video setup: ideally an external mic and good lighting. Poor audio quality is the #1 reason for auto-rejection in async video screens.
  • Answer length: 90–120 seconds is the sweet spot. Under 60 seconds reads as underprepared; over 3 minutes reads as unfocused.
  • STAR structure: Situation (10 sec) → Task (10 sec) → Action (60 sec, be specific) → Result (20 sec, quantify).
  • Named entities: mention specific tech, projects, and outcomes from YOUR resume. Zara transcribes and the scoring model rewards specificity over generic phrasing.
  • Look at the camera — not at your notes. Zara is scored by a system that includes gaze detection.
