The Meta interview is a 5-stage loop: Recruiter screen through to offer. Fast-paced, coding-first, with a strong signal on product intuition and behavioral. Meta moves quickly — expect back-to-back rounds. Candidates are scored against 6 stated values, and the 5 questions below are the ones that recur most across recent loops.

Interview loop

  1. Recruiter screen (30 min)
  2. Technical phone screen — 2 coding problems in 45 min
  3. Full loop (5 rounds): 2 coding + 1 system design (senior+) + 1 behavioral + 1 hiring manager
  4. Team match
  5. Offer

What Meta values

Every behavioral answer should map back to one of these. Interviewers score explicitly against them.

  • Move fast
  • Focus on long-term impact
  • Build awesome things
  • Live in the future
  • Be direct and respect your colleagues
  • Meta, metamates, me

Top questions with answer frameworks

These aren't verbatim leaks — they're the shapes that keep showing up. Practice the framework, not the exact wording.

Coding

Given a binary tree, return the in-order traversal.

Recursive is 5 lines. Iterative with a stack is the follow-up they want — shows you understand the mechanics. O(n) time, O(h) space where h is tree height. Mention both.

System design

Design Facebook News Feed.

Requirements: 3B users, 500M+ daily active, sub-second load. Approaches: pull vs push vs hybrid. Push (fanout on write) for regular users, pull (fanout on read) for celebrities. Data model: user, follows, post, feed_item. Ranking: ML scoring service. Discuss consistency vs staleness tradeoff.

Behavioral

Tell me about a project that failed.

Meta's 'be direct' value means they want you to own it. Structure: what you set out to do, what actually happened, what you learned, what you'd do differently. Avoid blaming others. The failure itself matters less than the reflection.

Coding

Merge k sorted linked lists.

Min-heap approach: O(N log k) where N = total nodes, k = number of lists. Alternative: divide-and-conquer merge, same complexity but easier to reason about. Interviewer wants to see you weigh the tradeoff.

Product / domain

How would you decide what to launch next on Instagram?

Product-sense probe. Frame: (1) which user segment matters most right now, (2) what metric you'd move, (3) what hypothesis you'd test, (4) how you'd measure success. Show you think in metrics, not features.

Compensation

E3 (new grad) SWE base: $170-200K + $50-100K stock + $20-30K bonus. E5 SWE: $220-280K base + $200-400K stock + $40-60K bonus.

Culture note

Meta interviewers are direct — if they don't understand your approach, they'll say so. Take it as data, not criticism. Iterate visibly.
