Amazon Online Assessment — Format, Length and What It Tests
Run on
internal assessment platform, HireVue for some roles
What the assessment involves
- Debugging section — fix broken code under a timer, usually 20-30 minutes
- Two coding problems, roughly 70 minutes total
- Work Style Assessment — situational judgement against the Leadership Principles
- Work Simulation — an inbox-and-decisions exercise for some orgs
Amazon's is the most-searched OA of any company, and the part people are least ready for is not the coding. The Work Style Assessment is scored, it maps to the Leadership Principles, and there is no way to prepare for it in the last ten minutes. Read the principles properly before you start.
The part people underestimate
The debugging section catches strong candidates because it is a different skill from writing code — you are reading someone else's broken solution against a clock. Practise reading code, not just producing it.
How to prepare for it
Read the invitation email before anything else. It states the duration, the number of sections, and whether the session is monitored — and those are employer settings, so advice written about another company's version of the same platform will be wrong about them.
Then practise the specific shape above rather than general problem solving. An assessment with a debugging section rewards reading code; a recorded video stage rewards rehearsed, structured answers; a live pairing session rewards thinking out loud. Preparing for the wrong one of those is the most common way strong candidates underperform.

How long is the Amazon assessment?
Length varies by role and team, but the stages listed on this page are the ones Amazon uses. The invitation email states the exact duration for your sitting, and it is the only authoritative source — assessment configuration is set per employer and per requisition.
What trips people up in the Amazon assessment?

Can I retake it?
Retake policy is set by the employer, not the platform, and is usually stated in the invitation. Many companies enforce a cooling-off period of six to twelve months before you can sit the same assessment again, so treat the first attempt as the real one.
