The Amazon interview is a 5-stage loop: Recruiter screen through to offer. Leadership Principles-heavy. Expect every behavioral answer to map to at least one LP. Coding rounds are LeetCode medium; system design at senior+. Candidates are scored against 16 stated values, and the 5 questions below are the ones that recur most across recent loops.
Interview loop
- Recruiter screen
- OA (online assessment) — 2 coding problems + work simulation + logic puzzles
- Phone screen with hiring manager (behavioral + 1 coding)
- Full loop: 4-5 rounds, each explicitly mapping to 2-3 LPs. One 'Bar Raiser' round — most weight.
- Debrief + offer

Top questions with answer frameworks
These aren't verbatim leaks — they're the shapes that keep showing up. Practice the framework, not the exact wording.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you had to make a decision without all the data. (Bias for Action)
STAR with quantified outcome. Situation with urgency. Task with ambiguity. Action showing you weighed known risks. Result — quantify and mention what you learned. Bar Raisers want signal that you'll act under uncertainty without recklessness.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager. (Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit)
Amazon wants to see you push back with data AND ultimately commit. Structure: the disagreement, how you argued the alternative, the eventual decision, how you executed even when your view lost. The 'commit' part is critical.
Coding
Given a rotated sorted array, find the minimum element.
Modified binary search, O(log n). Compare mid to right — if mid > right, minimum is in right half. Amazon coding rounds care about clean code + edge cases (empty, single element, no rotation).
System design
Design Amazon.com product page for 1B pageviews/day.
Multi-tier caching (CDN → Redis → DB). Read replicas. Sharded product catalog. Async inventory updates. ELB → Auto-Scaling Groups. Amazon interviewers love scale numbers — throw in specifics (e.g., 10K RPS peak, sub-100ms P99).
Behavioral
Describe a time you dove deep to fix a problem others gave up on. (Dive Deep)
Show technical rigor — logs, metrics, reproduction. Avoid vague 'I investigated.' Say what tools, what data, what dead-ends. Result: what changed and how it was measured.
Compensation
L4 (new grad) SWE base: $160-180K + $30-70K stock (4-year vest, back-loaded) + $30-40K sign-on. L6 SWE: $210K base + $250-500K stock + $30-100K sign-on. Amazon caps base at $350K.

Culture note
The Bar Raiser is the single most important round — often an interviewer from outside your target team, empowered to veto. They're looking for someone who raises the bar for the whole company, not just fits the role. Bring your best behavioral stories here.
