Ace your Apple interview

Team-specific and craft-focused. Less standardized than FAANG peers — every team runs its own loop. Expect deep domain questions on the specific area you applied for (iOS, silicon, ML infra, etc.). Secrecy is real — you often won't know exact team until offer.

The Apple interview is a 5-stage loop: Recruiter screen through to offer. Team-specific and craft-focused. Less standardized than FAANG peers — every team runs its own loop. Expect deep domain questions on the specific area you applied for (iOS, silicon, ML infra, etc.). Secrecy is real — you often won't know exact team until offer. Candidates are scored against 5 stated values, and the 5 questions below are the ones that recur most across recent loops.

Interview loop

  1. Recruiter screen
  2. Hiring manager technical + culture (60 min)
  3. Team panel: 3-5 rounds, coding + domain-specific + design + behavioral
  4. Cross-functional (partner team) round
  5. Offer conversation with recruiter

What Apple values

Every behavioral answer should map back to one of these. Interviewers score explicitly against them.

  • Best products
  • Care about details
  • Simple over complex
  • Focus
  • Excellence

Top questions with answer frameworks

These aren't verbatim leaks — they're the shapes that keep showing up. Practice the framework, not the exact wording.

Coding

Given a stream of integers, return the median at any point.

Two heaps: max-heap for lower half, min-heap for upper half. Balance after each insert so sizes differ by at most 1. Median is top of larger heap or average of both tops. O(log n) insert, O(1) query.

System design

Design the offline-sync mechanism for Notes.app.

CRDT (conflict-free replicated data type) approach. Client edits produce ops with vector clocks; server applies in causal order. Discuss last-write-wins vs op-based merge. Data model, storage layer (CoreData → iCloud sync). Handle network partition + eventual consistency.

Behavioral

Why Apple? (Behavioral)

Apple weighs this heavily — they want people who genuinely care about the craft, not just paycheck. Reference a specific Apple product you use daily and what about its design you admire. Avoid corporate flattery — be specific.

Product / domain

Describe how you'd optimize memory in a foreground app on iPhone.

iOS-specific. Instruments profiling (Allocations, Leaks), lazy loading, image downscaling, autorelease pool tuning, cache eviction policies (NSCache), UIImage vs UIImageView reuse. Discuss VM pressure warnings + how you'd respond to didReceiveMemoryWarning.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you obsessed over a detail others thought was unimportant.

Apple's 'care about details' is literal. Story: pick something small (button spacing, animation curve, error message tone) and explain why it mattered to the user experience. Quantify the outcome if possible.

Compensation

ICT2 (new grad) SWE base: $150-180K + $50-100K stock + $15-25K bonus. ICT4 SWE: $220-260K base + $200-400K stock + $50-80K bonus. Apple RSUs vest 25% annually.

Culture note

Apple engineers ship in silence. If you're the type who wants LinkedIn credit for every feature, this isn't the place. Interviewers screen for people who take intrinsic satisfaction from craft.
