The Netflix interview is a 5-stage loop: Recruiter screen through to offer. Senior-only hiring — no new-grad program. Rounds are conversational, not whiteboard-heavy. Expect deep dives into your past work, architecture choices, and how you handle context/autonomy. The 'Keeper Test' culture permeates every conversation. Candidates are scored against 9 stated values, and the 5 questions below are the ones that recur most across recent loops.

Interview loop

  1. Recruiter screen (30-45 min, culture-heavy)
  2. Hiring manager (60 min, deep on past projects)
  3. Technical panel: 3-4 rounds — architecture discussion, coding (take-home or live, role-dependent), domain deep-dive, cross-functional
  4. Culture round with a senior leader
  5. Offer (single-number cash — no stock refresh)

Top questions with answer frameworks

These aren't verbatim leaks — they're the shapes that keep showing up. Practice the framework, not the exact wording.

System design

Walk me through the architecture of a system you built end-to-end.

Netflix's signature round. Pick something you actually shipped, not a toy. Cover: original constraints, your design choices, tradeoffs you rejected and why, what broke in production, what you'd do differently now. They want senior-engineer judgment — no hand-waving. Expect them to interrupt with 'why not X?' — have real answers.

System design

Design the video-streaming pipeline for 260M concurrent users during a live event.

Multi-CDN (Open Connect Appliances at ISPs), adaptive bitrate (HLS/DASH), request coalescing at edge, pre-warming caches based on scheduled events, regional failover. Discuss chunked encoding, DRM (Widevine/PlayReady), and the tail-latency problem for interactive features. Netflix built OCA specifically to solve last-mile scale — reference it.

Behavioral

Tell me about a decision you made that you later regretted.

Netflix values judgment above almost everything. They want to see calibrated self-reflection, not humblebrag. Pick a real decision with a bad outcome, explain what information you had, what you'd have needed to make the right call, and how the experience recalibrated your instinct. Avoid 'my mistake was working too hard.'

Coding

Given a stream of events, find the top-K most frequent in a sliding window.

Count-Min Sketch + heap for approximate; exact needs a hashmap + sorted structure updated as window slides. Discuss space/accuracy tradeoff. For infinite streams, cite Space-Saving algorithm. Netflix cares more about your reasoning about tradeoffs than the perfect implementation.

Product / domain

How would you decide whether to greenlight a new original series?

Domain/business-sense probe. Frame as a data question: expected hours watched, subscriber acquisition/retention lift, cost per hour, competitive landscape. Netflix famously uses viewing data — reference that. Then discuss the qualitative side (talent, timing, cultural moment) that data can't capture.

Compensation

Senior SWE (L5): $500-750K all-cash (no stock, no bonus split — one number). Staff SWE (L6): $700K-1.1M all-cash. Netflix's 'top of market' comp philosophy means they pay the highest base salaries in tech, but no upside from equity appreciation.

Use our salary calculator to convert a total-comp offer to actual take-home by state.

Culture note

Netflix's Culture Deck is not a marketing document — it's the operating manual. The Keeper Test ('would I fight to keep this person?') applies to every employee every quarter. Interviewers screen for people who can operate without process and won't need managing. If you thrive on structure and cadence, Netflix will feel unmoored.
