HireVue Assessment — What It Is and What to Expect
Run on
HireVue
What the assessment involves
- Recorded video answers to pre-set questions, with a countdown per question
- Sometimes game-based assessments alongside, depending on the employer
HireVue is asynchronous: there is no interviewer, you record answers to questions that appear one at a time, and you usually get limited retakes. Employers use it early in the funnel where they have more applicants than interviewer hours.
The part people underestimate
Answer the question that was asked, in a structured way, and finish inside the timer. A rambling answer that runs out of time scores worse than a shorter complete one.
How to prepare for it
Read the invitation email before anything else. It states the duration, the number of sections, and whether the session is monitored — and those are employer settings, so advice written about another company's version of the same platform will be wrong about them.
Then practise the specific shape above rather than general problem solving. An assessment with a debugging section rewards reading code; a recorded video stage rewards rehearsed, structured answers; a live pairing session rewards thinking out loud. Preparing for the wrong one of those is the most common way strong candidates underperform.
Questions
What is the HireVue online assessment?
HireVue is asynchronous: there is no interviewer, you record answers to questions that appear one at a time, and you usually get limited retakes. Employers use it early in the funnel where they have more applicants than interviewer hours.
How long is the HireVue assessment?
Length varies by role and team, but the stages listed on this page are the ones HireVue uses. The invitation email states the exact duration for your sitting, and it is the only authoritative source — assessment configuration is set per employer and per requisition.
What trips people up in the HireVue assessment?
Answer the question that was asked, in a structured way, and finish inside the timer. A rambling answer that runs out of time scores worse than a shorter complete one.
Can I retake it?
Retake policy is set by the employer, not the platform, and is usually stated in the invitation. Many companies enforce a cooling-off period of six to twelve months before you can sit the same assessment again, so treat the first attempt as the real one.
